Log 2 - Concepting
Before even getting into algorithm design, I need to do some concepting for the visual style and the gameplay within PICO-8’s constraints.
The design document is available online for anyone to view.

In writing the “general info” section, I realised my aim is to make a relaxing and polished experience, with the option for more advanced gameplay (such as speedrunning timers) available.
I love Picross because it’s simple but still mentally taxing - it’s like a low-stress Tetris. I want to make a Picross game with little to no friction for the player, with some nice calming visual elements.
I conducted an informal review of existing Picross games, highlighting key features I enjoyed and disliked - this will inform a requirements list that I’ll draw up later this week.
Next I need to find more visual inspirations to decide on a visual style.
